I mainly use Cakewalk Sonar on a DAW with no other applications running in the background (no internet connection, AV, firewall etc).
Mainly record stuff with guitars either mic-ed up or direct into the soundcard but also some midi VSTs, preferring the older repros (pro 53, B4, absynth etc) controlled with a Oxygen 49 keyboard. I Also sometimes use sony Soundforge for editing and chopping up single files -cos its simple and easy and I've been using it for years
On line, I just use Audacity if there's some sounds I want to capture(that cant be dl-ed)

I started out using Cakewalk Professional 4 about 12 years ago in high school (and then at home) to compose original songs and arrangement as well in MIDI format. Over the years I did the same, upgrading Cakewalk as I went, trying other products such as Finale, not ever really getting into them. Last year I really got into Fruity Loops Studio 7 (and then 8) and SoundFonts and everything. I never really got into VSTs though, just whatever comes with FL is all I need in combination with all the GB of SoundFonts I have. I still occasionally use Cakewalk if I need to do something specific that I can't do as well in FL, and then import the resulting MIDI into FL and tweak it just right there.

I love music production, but unfortunately i don't have too much time for it lately.. I've tried reason, logic, ableton, FL, Mackie Tracktion and Cubase. But those that better adapt to my needs are FL and logic platinum

A good set of VST's and plugins is crucial to create good a track, for me korg and Native Instruments have the best VST's!!
But i think the hard part is mastering your music, equalize all the channels for a high definition output..
I've got a couple of friends that work professionally in the music scene,
Cytric,
Cosmic Station and
Chemical Plasma, house and Psychedelic Trance Dj's.

I dabbled the most with that back when FastTracker II was still the best app around, making techno-like tracks mostly. I have one of those piano-keyboards you can hook up to the computer, but haven't used it since 2005 as my current computer lacks the gameport it needs. I also tried Reason a few years ago and liked it but haven't done much with music for a long time.

Not done it for a while cause I'm on pretty old lappy at the moment...new rig in a few months though..anyways... Ableton, Reason, Fruity Loops are the only ones I have used with much success and enjoyment. I love crafting tunes though... also, using real Roland 808, 909, and 303...awesome.

you are referring to a MIDI keyboard

and yes, a MIDI cable requires a gameport on your computer. However, they do now have USB MIDI cables you can buy to use!

Guitar to Zoom G21u to TASCAM DP-004 4-track, an SM-58 for vocals, an old Boss programable drum machine, basic Casio and Yamaha keyboards which can acheive incredible sounds when use with the Zoom pedal and a Rocktron Banshee talk box all thru the DP-004. Send waves to PC where I edit each track in n-Tracks 6 using the dozens of VSTs it excepts, Steinberg Wavelab if needed, then Final mix, and master in n-Tracks. I have used Fruity to create some cool beats as well.
I like to keep it simple
