How To Open Animated GIF Files In Photoshop CS3 Extended

I got a few PM's regarding on how to open animated GIF files via Photoshop. I don't quite remember where I got the idea from ummm.gifa comment on some site I guess.. unsure.gif
anyways.... here is the tutorial I made. If you find any part difficult to understand give me a shout.gif

NOTE: Ensure that you have installed Quick Time 7 in your PC.
sure.gif

● Open up Photoshop. Go to File -> Import -> Video Frames to Layers...

● Open up the folder which contains your Gif files. search.gif

● Type " *.* " in the File name field and Click Load. Now the GIF files will show up. yahoo.gif

● Click the Gif File you want to import and hit Enter.

Import Video To Layers dialog box will appear.

● By default Make Frame Animation box is checked. But do make sure. read.gif

● Click OK. Now your animated gif file will be loaded into photohshop frame by frame.

● Now you can edit your GIF animation the way you like it.

● To Save Your Animation. Hit Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S or Go to File -> Save for Web & Devices.

● Click Save.

Hope this benefits someone in some way or the other. tongue.gif

for people that are new to ps, this way you can also make gif files, just open a picture, go to animation, duplicate the layer and hit tween, then you enter the amount of frames, and then edit evry frame :)

Thanks clapping.gif I haven't tried editing any animated gifs in CS3 before, just the ones I made in CS3 from scratch, using the PSD, so this will help tremendously if I ever want to!
Dr.Upload
Well it helps to extract images from gif files,
I recently used this gif files to make a sig.

unionjack
Think the most gifs Ive used in a sig has been 10.
The problem with this is that it doesnt import it as a transparent background so the rendering has to be spot on, and if youre using one thats fast with alot of frames it becomes very difficult (and boring lol)
Dr.Upload
I hear you, phew.gif its annoying and time consuming.
JasonP27
if it's an animation with only a few frames, I will open it in Ulead Gif Animator 5, save the image frames to individual PNG files, and then just add them in CS3 as my layers, and make frames from layers in the Animation pane

edit:

OR

just save the animation as a PSD using Ulead Gif Animator 5 and then open the PSD in Photoshop and make frames from layers in the Animation pane doh.gif
Dr.Upload
^^^^^^^^IMHO its a lot easier importing gif files to photoshop & then editing it. sure.gif The method you use looks like a lot of work unsure.gif
JasonP27
yeah doing the individual frames would take longer (unless it's just 5 frames or less) but for some people it would be easier

I just noticed that Gif Animator 5 can save in the PSD format, so all you have to do is open the gif with Gif Animator, save as PSD, open PSD in PS, and make frames from layers... no background removal necessary... I'm actually glad I found that
Dr.Upload
Now thats something I dint know, a013.gif I do have gif animator somewhere in my HD, ahh well I'll just have to download the new one. biggrin.gif
JasonP27
it's as easy as 1, 2, 3 !

they discontinued Gif Animator, the last version was 5.5 I think
Dr.Upload
hmm... the only demerit of photoshop import function is that it dose not support transparency, I'm downloading it at the moment!
Thanks again Jason for the helpful tip. good.gif
