Hi
Am totally new at this, needed help help.gif
Am downloading Ubuntu Live CD and already have VMware from Mazuki's archive...
Have Ram 4GB

(1.)What i wanted to know was with Ubuntu Live CD is there need to install VMWare
(2.)Whether to install VMWare and install ubuntu in this Virtual Machine

Which is a better option, what are the adv and disadv of both options, will installing VMWare and than ubuntu (second option) lead to wastage of space.
What should i do dntknw.gif

I presume you are
a) running windows
b) wanting to learn/play with linux

I suggest installing vmware, installing linux in that. a live cd can do some cool stuff, but not as much as a full install. for example, you can't install new packages, modify files, etc.

another option is to install ubuntu using wubi. no partition changes are made, and you still have a full install of ubuntu.

I already downloaded Ubuntu
mounted the image, when i clicked the virtual image drive letter it opens up in another window explorer "windows", where i see a wubi.exe file,
Do i double click that file to run the Live CD

When i doubled click gives me 3 options
(1.)Demo and full installation
(2.)Install inside Windows

Which is the option to choose to run the CD Live without installing.

And what is the way i install it fully inside VMWare (meaning not the Live CD way)
(1.)Demo and full installation

option 1 is the normal live CD option. it will reboot your computer, and boot from the cd.
option 2 is wubi.

when it says "Demo and Full Install" it means "Ubuntu Live with an option to do a Full Install"

So do i use wubi inside VMWare or do i use Demo and full installation inside VMWare....what do i use inside VMWare.

You would use Full install inside of VMWare and use Wubi from Windows. I recommend doing the install inside of Windows and not worrying about Vmware. It's very simple and Ubuntu is simply a program on your Add/Remove programs list. So it is very easy to uninstall.

I have Ubuntu installed inside Windows on my laptop and you simply get a prompt when you start up whether you want to start up Windows or Ubuntu...

unless you are running windows in the intended virtual machine, it wouldn't even be an option.
you would open up vmware, set up the virtual machine, set the cd-rom to the ISO file, and turn it on. it would automatically boot the iso, as if it were a live cd.

Hi
Before i received your replies i had already gone ahead with the installation.....
What i have done is installed VMWare and than done a full install of ubuntu inside VMWare......
That way i can use windows webrowser firefox incase ubuntu doesnt connect to internet....but luckily everything went smooth and was able to connect to internet....

My question (as after a few days once i get the feel of ubuntu, i would be uninstalling VMWare......) is if i install ubuntu via wubi (ie inside windows) than to access ubuntu would i have to boot and choose between windows or ubuntu,......or would i first have to load windows and than access ubuntu inside windows....how does wubi work (do you have to load windows first and than start ubuntu).
Ferretboy
If you install Ubuntu inside of Windows then your computer will ask you if you want to boot up Windows or Ubuntu when you first start it. To get back and forth you need to restart the computer.

Thanxs for your prompt reply.....so for the time being i will stick to VMWare and ubuntu inside it , that way if i have some problems in ubuntu, i can just minimize VMWare window and via window webrowser i can try to figure out on the net what the problem is drinks.gif

Hi fms,

after installing your ubuntu or any other OS inside VMware i recommend you to copy the virtual machine to another folder and keep a clean copy of it...

so you can play with your original Virtual machine and break it... and just delete it... and in minutes have a new Virtual machine...

there is also an option to make snapshots... so you can return to that point....
