1)Create a blank image and fill the background with black. Press X on the keyboard(to flip colors)
and then select the Type Tool — type whatever you want.

2)Make a copy of this layer and hide it we will need this for later on in the tutorial.

3)To center the text on your image, press CTRL+A » CTRL+X » CTRL+V and then press CTRL+E
to merge the text layer into the black background.

4)Next, use Filter » Stylize » Wind with the settings "Wind" and "from the left". Press CTRL+F
to apply the same filter over again a second time. Now use another Filter » Stylize » Wind, but
this time with the settings "Wind" and "from the right". Press CTRL+F to re-apply, just like before.

5)The next step is to repeat the same process we applied to the sides, but this time to the top and
bottom. Since there isn't a "top or bottom" option in the wind dialog box, we will turn the image itself
around. Use Image » Rotate Canvas » 90 CCW. Apply the wind just like before, two on the left and
two on the right. When you have completed this task, use Image » Rotate Canvas>90 CW in order to
straighten your work up.

6)Apply Filter » Blur » Gaussian Blur with a value of 2, then Filter » Distort » Ripple with the default values.

7)Change the image to Grayscale by using Image » Mode » Grayscale and then to Image » Mode » Indexed
Color. next we need to give our image some color choose Image » Mode » Color Table. Since we're shooting
for a fire effect choose the Black Body table.

8)Well our text complete but all that heat does make it a tiny bit difficult to read. use the copy of your original
text layer back in Step 1 drag it to the top position in your Layer Palette and there you have it yahoo.gif

Any problems please ask hope you like it! a013.gif

That rocks!

really nice tut and effect man. kudos
Teebs
used already, thanks, very thorough walkthrough, only stumbled a bit nearer the end changing the modes because the colour table requires layer merging (so the duplicate before is useless unless you remember to drop it back on the top (or alternatively readd the text and center it.

Great tutorial, had the same problem though at the end with the mode, had to re add the text layer as I couldn't create a new layer in the index mode, had to change to RGB, thanks again needed this for a poster I was doing a few weeks ago, but sure I have it now. Sorry here's how it turned out.
