Lesotho is a mountainous country that lies within the borders of South Africa. I just spent a few days walking and camping there and never dropped below 9000 ft altitude. The combination of altitude and middle of winter means it's cold there now, nights were 10-15 degrees C below freezing (reminded me on nights on Dartmoor in the UK) but I didn't see any tourists around the nature reserve areas so it was worth it.

Here's a few pics I took mostly around the Mafika Lisiu Pass and Bokong Reserve area;

The locals were very poor but very friendly, they basically subsistence farm without the aid of mechanisation and vehicles. The children just wanted sweets and candies, I was a bit of a disappointment to them because I could only offer them the biscuits and disgusting chocolate from my rat packs.

In summer maybe. I don't think the photo conveys how cold it is there. grin.gif

Hi Capt,

Dam fishing is mostly trout (by the millions) but it wasn't season when I was there. Yellowfish and barbel in the rivers and lower areas. Permits are cheap and there's loads of tourist fly fishing in the more accessible areas of the highlands.

I was pushing it with the distances I had planned and I didn't want to carry fishing tackle so I did a bit of a Bear Grylls number and took enough food. I was one step up from him though cause I did actually sleep in my tent with the exception of one night in a rondaaval. biggrin.gif
